Fortis Kangra joins elite league with the launch of CRRT life-support therapy

Fortis Kangra bridges healthcare gap with advanced SpyGlass and CRRT technology

Dr. Vikas Baniyal and Dr. Ilango lead breakthrough procedures in the region

Himachal patients spared from out-of-state travel for critical life-saving care

KANGRA: In a monumental leap toward self-reliance in the healthcare sector, Fortis Hospital, Kangra (FHK) has officially established itself as a pioneer of medical innovation in Himachal Pradesh. The hospital recently announced the successful execution of two highly specialized procedures: the region’s first SpyGlass™️ Cholangioscopy and the introduction of Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT). These milestones mark a paradigm shift, ensuring that residents of the hill state have access to world-class tertiary care without the traditional need to migrate to neighboring states like Punjab or Chandigarh for emergency interventions.

The Department of Gastroenterology, under the visionary leadership of Dr. Vikas Baniyal, achieved a historic feat by performing three complex biliary cases using the SpyGlass™️ Direct Visualization System combined with Electrohydraulic Lithotripsy (EHL). This cutting-edge technology allows for a high-definition, “inside-the-body” view of the bile and pancreatic ducts. Historically, large or impacted gallstones required invasive open surgeries with long recovery periods. However, with this new minimally invasive endoscopic capability, stones are fragmented with laser-like precision under direct vision. This technique not only minimizes risk but also ensures that patients are back on their feet within days, reflecting the hospital’s commitment to technology-driven patient outcomes.

Simultaneously, the Critical Care unit at Fortis Kangra reached a new pinnacle of excellence. Dr. Ilango and his dedicated team successfully performed the hospital’s inaugural CRRT procedure.

This makes Fortis Kangra only the second facility in the entire state—following AIIMS Bilaspur—to offer this sophisticated level of life support. CRRT is a specialized, 24-hour continuous blood purification process designed for the most vulnerable patients in the ICU. It is specifically used for those suffering from acute kidney injury (AKI) or severe sepsis who are too hemodynamically unstable to withstand conventional dialysis.

By integrating these advanced platforms, Fortis Hospital, Kangra is not just treating diseases; it is building a robust safety net for the people of Himachal. The availability of such high-end clinical care locally is expected to significantly improve survival rates for critical patients and reduce the financial and emotional burden on families who previously had to seek such treatments in distant metropolitan centers.
